To start at the very beginning, arriving phoning reception making our way to our room excellent. The way the dining room was laid out excellent & we loved being next to the piano & having Trevor for our waiter, who has a dry sense of humour which we all love especially Ruth. I think overall it was one of the nicest weekends we have had, everyone without exception was thrilled to not only have jazz but the very best of jazz. My favourite has to be Cadillac Xpress, I danced the whole evening in my chair, hip paying for it now thank goodness for paracetamol thought I was seventeen!! Always love the request show to get both our requests played & lots more requested by others that was a bonus.
DixieMix well they were like a breath of fresh air, loved the Ronie Wood look alike guitarist they were all fantastic but so fast was really glad there was no dancing.
Ralph Allin yes I loved the two sets I listened too ..Well what can I say about Dart Valley Stompers, they played their socks off & I loved it, really nice tribute from Graham Gordon Stafford was a favourite of lots of us, I remember talking with him & Graham at the Prince of Orange when Martin & I first started coming to jazz memories.
However this may or may not be what you asked for on the feedback form but you got it anyway. Last but by no means least a very big thank youto you and Jeremy without you there would be no jazz at the Redcliffe. Where we go from here I just don't know, these guidelines are supposed to be easy to understand but I'm floundering so do youknow what it means for hotels & live entertainment? Love to you both & thanks once again

WHAT PEOPLE SAY about the January 2020 Weekend at the Redcliffe

Thanks for another great weekend. As usual we enjoyed the mix of excellent bands and music. We loved Dale Whitlock and his dad John Whitlock on guitar and banjo. Dale was new to us, so were Lady be Good who were great entertainment on a grey, rainy afternoon.
The request show seems to get better every time. We particularly enjoyed 'Oblivion', Jeremy playing the flute is always a treat.
Good to see the two talented Alex's. the Jazz and Boogie band was a great end to the weekend.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY about the January 2019 Weekend at the Redcliffe and about Jeremy Huggett

Hi again Maria & Jeremy,
We have caught up on some sleep since arriving home yesterday lunchtime!! Hope you have had a few moments to unwind and relax.
We wanted to thank you both for a superb weekend at the Redcliffe Hotel in Paignton, the programme of bands was 'top drawer' and the performances they gave equally matched their pedigree throughout. Each band delivered something different which ensured a varied and very enjoyable experience. It was good to see so many of our musician friends who have entertained us so well at Kingsbridge and a few that were new to us.
Your organisation was excellent in every respect and the seats you allocated to Jenny and I (Table 8) in the ballroom were perfect with the ideal angle for my restricted vision.
There was however, one 'stand-out' musician for us who deserves a special mention for his superb 200%++ sustained delivery of every part of his many performances, yes Jeremy its you, you are clearly the best reed player in the country in our view and every ounce of the applause you recieved was richly deserved throughout the weekend ........... we look forward to your return to Kingsbridge in August.

I enjoyed all the bands that played over the weekend, but particularly enjoyed the Shirt Tail Stompers and the Last band standing. I loved the atmosphere they created as it isn't easy to get elderly people to relax enough to join in, Kevin Grenfell is great at doing this and with Jeremy, who is amazing, together they can do it. The Shirt Tail Stompers- refreshingly different - young they all stood up!! Great start to the weekend. Jeremy's request show - I always like this afternoon don't get me wrong whatever they are playing they are playing something special for whoever requests it and it shows. Shades of Jazz - First set was a bit lack lustre, but when they got it together it was rolling and none stop to the end - loved it. John Hallam Quintet - Just good jazz all the way and I so enjoy his little stories true or not and I'm sure they are true very amusing. Last Band Standing - Again I wasn't into the first set, second and third sets fantastic loved it. As you know I was a bit under par over the weekend but I was pleased I was there wouldn't have missed it. - Gloria Moss

'He would top my list for a top British All-rounder Award'

While travelling back in the after-glow of a jazz week-end par excellence, on the Devon coast in mid-September one question kept repeating itself in my mind in the midst of the multitude of musical memories created.

Is there or, indeed, can there be, a more multi-talented and versatile a musician among the many whose work we constantly enjoy, than Jeremy Huggett? It is possibly a question without an answer, of course, all down to personal opinion. And none of we jazz/blues/swing/r&b/mainstream aficionados have experienced them all. What I can state without fear of disagreement, however, is that in browsing back through my own seventy-odd years' love of the various genres I cannot name anyone from local musicians to world stars who has matched this maestro's range of true talents.

To give a snapshot of what I mean let me attempt to recall a spell during the week-end masterminded by him at the elegant and welcoming Redcliffe Hotel, from its prime Paignton position overlooking the panorama view of Torbay.

Huggett, leader and reeds man for the superb Dart Valley Stompers, plays all of the 'routine' Dixieland/trad/New Orleans numbers on clarinet or one or another of the glistening saxophones beside him, as do so many others of his soloist breed. He announces with typical musician wry humour, vocalises appropriately from time to time and leads the band along as necessary.

Then in a spell I seem to recall, he gave a raw and raucous rendition of the 1960s alto hit Flamingo, Earl Bostic-style and probably as good or better, then sat beside the keyboards player to pound out Pinetop's Boogie like Fats Domino on speed. From there he was back in the front line to give us a quite mesmerising End of the World on the flute, James Galway-ish, hauntingly beautiful and in a totally different mode to his previous upbeat pieces before giving us Some Day You'll be Sorry on sax and with jazzy vocal.

If that is not enough to illustrate his astonishing all-round talents then in another session he was part of the quintet backing the Ella Fitzgerald-style American Songbook singer Maggie Reeday, providing Lester Young tenor sax support and solos in standards such as These Foolish Things, Love for sale, I've Got you Under my Skin...lovely to hear them sung and sax-backed with such a feel for these wonderful classics of yesteryear.

OK, so I admit to having been more than a touch OTT in comparing his performance in different areas with the all-time greats but these were the names that my brain conjured up as I listened to JH's musical journey through decades of our kind of music. In short he arranges events, MCs them, leads and plays in a brilliant band, excels on clarinet and all the of the reeds, including flute, adds the keyboards and sings passably well, too, along the way.

No, no , he doesn't dance like either Fred Astaire or Sammy Davis Junior, (not built for it), but if there is a better all-round performer than him on the current UK jazz scene then I've not been fortunate enough to enjoy a week-end watching them.

And, as a final thought: I've no real idea about how the British Jazz Award winners are assessed but if there were a 'best all-rounder' category then he would be top of my personal short list of one.

The event is well organised, hotel comfortable. I have been 3 times before. The Dart Valley Stompers were the most enjoyable because they engaged in a more entertaining way with the audience. The other two bands were entertaining and the music for all three was excellent - Name withheld

I always enjoy the variety of bands that you have performing at the weekends - this is very important as it caters for varied tastes. Also, I like the fact that although the weekends are twice yearly, each one provides fresh bands so we don't have a chance to become bored. Its also nice to educate those who are learning about different jazz genres and if we wish, we can look out for those playing at other venues in the country.
